Been there, done that. With no eyeliner or cat, yet I feel you :) I have decided that plants belong to the 'outside' so I go out for long walks and photograph them with great delight!
Yes, they are expensive and often not very environmentally friendly the way they are grown. I invested in some good quality artificial flowers that I use most often. Of course it’s not the same but better than constantly buying commercial flowers.
One day, Chicken. One day we will find our green thumbs and make a luscious indoor garden. You made me chuckle many times throughout this piece. I so enjoy your non-fiction voice. It’s fun, whimsical, and witty. ❤️🐥😘
This sentence in particular made me laugh out loud, "Michael goes out there regularly, I’m not really sure why but I try not to get too caught up in trying to understand the male psyche – it keeps the mystery alive."😂🤣😂
You and Nicholas both—guilty! I will admit, indoor plant keeping is an art (and not one I’ve mastered either) but I keep trying because I’m always wanting to make inside feel more like outside… so if it’s not plants, I’d keep coming home with more cats!
Hahaha yes, he does get most of the blame but he doesn’t seem to mind too much. It’s a true art form - and entirely beyond me at this point. Oh, I definitely think you should bring home more cats!
The final line and the grim reaper one are so great that they almost distract me from my empathy for (and enjoyment of) the rest.
I, too, share your black thumb. I cannot keep plants alive. Cut flowers I can get a week from in a vase, and I’m a good direction follower, but there’s this disconnect between those skills and plant survival that I’ve never managed to bridge. With apologies to your late leaves, this made me feel very normal. I enjoyed it a lot.
A quick story: two years ago, a student gave me a small plant. It’s no secret I suck with plants, but this one stayed green! When I saw them later, I made sure to proudly tell them I’d kept it alive. They laughed—it was (and is) plastic. I had no idea :)

That is the conclusion I have also been forced to haha
I've reached the same conclusion
I am still laughing about keeping the mystery of the male psyche alive as well as the timeline of your project to clean the balcony🤣
Sounds like you're more of a flowers person than a plant person.
Hahaha, I am absolutely more of a flower person! But alas they are a bit cost prohibitive. I may have to invest in some fake plants…

That is such a good idea. I made some paper flowers and they are a nice alternative.

Thank you! Yes, one day in the surely far distant future hehe
Hehehe

Omg that is gold! And entirely the kind of mistake I would make haha
